PATRIOTIC FUNCTION

DANCE AND EUCHRE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Patriotic Committee held a most successful dance on Saturday evening. Despite the inclement weather there was a large attendance. The euchre prizes were won by Mesdames Atkinson and Spicer (ladies) and Messrs L. Watson and Kohai (men). Other prizes were won by Miss Spicer, Mr M. Ewing, and Mr Burling. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs F. Lovegrove. The M.C. was Mr Mclntosh and the music was supplied by a local band. National Party. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the local branch of the National Party, which was held on Tuesday evening. Several matters were discussed and dealt with. The officers for the ensuing year were elected.

Influenza Prevalent. Influenza is very prevalent in this district.

Closing of Cheese Factory.

The local cheese factory will close down for the season on Sunday. The season has been a good one and the output considerably in excess of last season. Dance Proceeds to Red Cross. At the recent dance held under the auspices of the local Women’s Institute, the’ net proceeds, which amounted to £23 10s 6d were handed over to the Red Cross at Martinborough. Personal. Mrs Chas. Edwards, Featherston, was the guest of Miss Scrimegour recently. Private Douglas Kitney, Trentham, visited friends here at the weekend. Misses C. and M. Enoka were recent guests of their aunt, Mrs Riwai. Private Chas. Todd, Dannevirke, was a visitor here over the weekend. Miss Bessie Carter has returned to Napier. Mrs J. Pilmer, Matawai, has arrived on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Carter.

Mr and Mrs R. Pearce and their family have left for their new home at Wairoa.

Misses McDougall, Wellington, are staying with their aunt, Miss N. McDougall. Miss Cock is visiting relatives in the North.

Mesdames Burling and Mclntosh are spending a holiday with relatives in Carterton.

Mr John Priest, who has been confined to his bed, is now making good progress towards recovery.

Mr Captain Carter, who is in the Masterton Hospital, is gradually improving in health. Mr and Mrs Evetts, Inglewood, were recent guests of Mr and Mrs G. Thomas.

Mr and Mrs L. Bell were weekend visitors to Wellington.

Weddings.

A wedding of considerable interest to this district and other parts of the Wairarapa took place at Sydney on Tuesday, when Guy, fourth son of Mrs Hume and the late Mr W.' Hume, of Raho Ruru, was married to Miss June McLean, of Sydney. Mr Guy Hume, who is a member of the Australian Forces, returned recently to Australia from overseas. His numerous friends will wish him every happiness and prosperity. A wedding of interest to the Native fraternity of this district was solemnised at Dannevirke recently when Mrs M. Te Maari, widow of the late Mr Toko Te Maari, was married to Mr E. Taurau. Both are well-known residents of the district.
