CARTERTON

4 COUNTY AFFAIRS MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the South Wairarapa County Council yesterday afternoon it was resolved that the rates for the current year be the same as last year, except for a slight increase in the Hospital Rate. Councillor L. S. Gallon considered it would be unwise to allow bitumen roads to go to ruin for the want of attention. Some surfaces at present were wearing badly. The chairman and councillors concurred. The engineer, Mr Pavitt, estimated the cost of urgent repairs at about £6OO. It was resolved that the engineer make enquiries in regard to obtaining material required for the work.

The Carrington and Taratahi water race overseer’s reports were received. It was resolved that the council approve the appointment of Councillor E. McKenzie' as deputy chairman of the E.P.S. body in Carterton and district.

It was resolved that £3,000 be invested in the Liberty War Loan on the short term.

PHENOMENAL RAIN

DAMAGE ON EAST COAST ROADS.

In submitting his monthly report of damage to East Coast roads during a recent deluge of rain the overseer said that much damage had been caused to roads in the district and the repairing of same would be a long job. In some places there had been wash-outs two chains long and 14 feet deep at one end, and the course of creeks had been changed. PATRIOTIC EFFORT CARTERTON AND DISTRICT’S QUOTA. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over a meeting of the Carterton Committee held last evening. Mr G. S. George was appointed organiser of a renewed effort to &fise further funds for the Carterton and South Wairarapa 1942 Patriotic Appeal for £4067.

Mr W. Sorensen is to be approached for permission to display a large calico sign on the southern side of his premises, advertising the urgent need for saving waste paper. It was resolved to ask the Picture Company to donate the whole of its proceeds from a Friday night picture programme.

The secretary’s action in writing to the Y.M.C.A. brigade headquarters asking for a donation towards . the patriotic funds was endorsed. It wag decided that a request be made to the Masterton Central Patriotic Committee for a supply of sports gear provided application has not already been made direct by headquarters.

“John Bull” is to be approached with a view to ascertaining the exact amount collected in Masterton from people residing in Carterton and Wairatapa South County. The following were appointed as a campaign committee: The Mayor (Mr Taverner), Messrs L. H. Smart, G. S. George, L. J. Fairbrother, W. Martin and Miss 0. W. Wolters, with power to add.

The offer of Mr J. A. Betts to-bring a concert party to Carterton in July was accepted, provided arrangements could be made for a suitable hall.

It was decided a weekly shop day should be inaugurated to start on Friday, May 29. The following rota was arranged: Belvedere-Carrington, May 29; Dalefield-Matarawa, Friday, June 5; Waihakeke-Parkvale, Friday, June 12; Ponatahi-Ahiaruhe, June 19. It Was decided to ask Mr W. Wong for use of his empty premises in High Street for shop day appeals. The Borough of Carterton is to be divided into zones to be represented by a canvasser to be attached to country districts on their respective shop days. The following were appointed: North-west, Mrs Pinfold (BelvedereCarrington); South-west, Mrs P. Beere 1 (Dalefield-Matarawa); South-east, Miss 0. Wolters (Parkvale-Waihakeke); North-east to be appointed (PonatahiAhiaruhe). Residents of the district are asked to notify the borough office of any waste paper available, when arrangements will be made for its early collection. Hockey. The Carterton ladies’ junior A hockey team to play the Carterton B team at Carterton tomorrow at 2 o’clock is as follows:—B. Matson, B. Parker, L. Hopkins, B. Lindop, P. George, N. Williams, L. Hood, M. Potter, R. Hopkins, A. Williams, V. Merwood. Church Service. . A Church of England service will be held at Waihakeke on Sunday next at 2 p.m. Personal. > Sgt. Pilot Minton, lately returned from Singapore, was a visitor to Mr and Mrs F. Court, Waihakeke, recently. Mr Alby Desmond, who is an inmate of Croydon Hospital and who underwent an operation for appendicitis, is improving in health. Mrs S. Sewell, Junr., has received a cablegram from her husband, L.A.C. Sewell stating that he is safe and well. Boy Scout Movement. Chief Commissioner Christie visited Carterton last evening and was met by District Commissioner R. N. Barton. He was taken to the Scout Deh and met the Scouts assembled under Scoutmaster Faii’brother. After a short stay with the boys the Chief Commissioner adjourned to the Fire Brigade Hall where he met a fair attendance of citizens' Sccuters. District Commissioner Barton presided and extended a hearty welcome to the Chief Commissioner, who at some length addressed his audi- : ence regarding the Scout movement!
