STATE HOUSING
SUSPENSION ONLY TEMPORARY. RESUMPTION ON LARGE SCALE. Reference to the position in regard to the State housing scheme was made in Masterton last night by Mr Armstrong, Minister of Public Works. Mr Armstrong said that while the demands of urgent defence work at present had caused a suspension of work on State houses, work would be resumed as soon as the more pressing needs had been met. It was intended to undertake a housing programme on a larger scale than was hitherto considered possible, in a determined effort to eliminate the housing shortage, which had prevailed since the last war. The new programme would aim at not only meeting the demands of the present applicants for State houses but also .to provide for men returning from overseas and wishing to settle down to married life.
