HARD HITTING

BY ALLIED AIR FORCES IN BURMA ATTACKS INCREASE IN SCALE & FREQUENCY. ENEMY' ADVANCE ON SALWEEN HALTED. LONDON, May 20. The Allied air offensive is growing in power from the border of Burma to the Chinese frontier. A New Delhi communique states that air operations continue to increase in scale and frequency. An attack was made on an enemyoccupied aerodrome in Burma and two attacks were directed at Akyab, where two out of four enemy planes are believed to have been destroyed and others damaged. On the other side of Burma an enemy aerodrome was also attacked. The American Volunteer Group and Chinese planes are also continuing a vigorous offensive. The United States headquarters in New Delhi states that the Japanese were paying so heavy a price in their advance on the Salween River that they have been brought to a standstill. During the last month American pilots have destroyed at least 56 Japanese planes.
