WAR DEMANDS

ALLOCATION OF MANPOWER

MOVE TO SECURE DEFINITE CO-ORDINATION. MR T. JORDAN ADDRESSES ROTARY CLUB. An informative review of the position in the Wairarapa in relation to the demands on manpower was given at today's luncheon of the Masterton Rotary Club by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, who is chairman of the Wairarapa Manpower Committee. Mr Jordan explained the system under which the Manpower Committee was set up in May, 1940, and reviewed the increasing demands made on manpower for military service, starting wiih voluntary enlistments, selection by ballots, and Territorial training for three months starting at 19 years'%f ago and its subsequent reduction to 18 years. In addition to the demands for military service, men were required ,

for industrial and farm work, the Home Guard, E.P.S. and Independent Mounted Rifles. He referred to some of the difficulties that had arisen in the allocation of manpower and said the recent appointment of regional commissioners and district controllers should prove helpful. There was a job to be done in the Wairarapa by the regional commissioner to straighten out the demands on manpower and try to make the whole of the organisations a stable establishment. Mr Jordan said he had already discussed the matter with the Independent Mounted Rifles. He expected a great deal of good to result from the activities of the liaison officer as a link between the army, civilian organisation and industry.
