PERSONAL

His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral presided at a meeting of the Executive Council yesterday morning. Subsequently his Excellency, attended by Captain H. G. Helmore, visited the Defence Headquarters. Mrs H. F. McCrae, New Plymouth, is staying with Mrs Holdsworth, Sussex Street. Air Chief Marshal Sir Charles Burnett has left Government House, Wellington. Mrs R. A. Renall, of Paihia, Bay of Islands, is at present staying with Mrs I. I. Day, Bannockburn, Gladstone. Colonel T. W. McDonald, who has represented the Wairarapa ward for the past 12 years on the Education Board, announces his intention to offer himself for election for a further term.

Mr William C. Mann, of Masterton, who has been on the office staff of Messrs T. Borthwick and Sons Ltd., for the past 18 years, has resigned from the firm’s employment and is leaving Masterton to take up his residence in Christchurch. For the past ten years Mr Mann has been choirmaster at St. Matthew’s Church. The member for Masterton, Mr J. Robertson, yesterday accompanied the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) on a tour of inspection of defence works in the Wairarapa. This morning Mr Robertson journeyed with Mr Armstrong to Wellington. After attending to departmental business, Mr Robertson will return to Masterton tomorrow.

Nearly one hundred guests assembled at the residence of Mr and Mrs P. D. McLachlan, Willow Park, last evening, on the occasion of the celebration of the coming-of-age of their daughter, Miss Shirley McLachlan. Dancing to music supplied by Mr A. Barnes was enjoj'ed and a euchre competition, which was won by Mr and Mrs P. Cotter, was played. Miss McLachlan was presented by her father with the customary key. A handsome birthday cake decorated with 21 candles, occupied pride of place on the supper table. Mr M. A. Rawlins proposed the toast of the guest of the evening, and Miss McLachlan replied. A number of toasts were honoured.
