ST. ANDREW SOCIETY
MR AND MRS WILLIAM C. MANN
FAREWELLED.
TRIBUTE TO SERVICES
An enjoyable time was spent last evening at a social gathering tendered by the members of the Saint Andrew Society Council and the Saint Andrew Ladies’ Choir to Mr and Mrs William C. Mann, who are shortly leaving Masterton.
Entertainment was provided by recitations by Chieftainess Mrs Robert Miller, and vocal solos by Mrs H. M. Morton, Miss D. O’Donnell, Miss Joan Douglas and Mr Mann. All these items were thoroughly enjoyed, and, in each case, repeat items were insisted on. A sumptuous supper, provided by the ladies present, afforded welcome refreshment after all had joined in a number of Scots dances.
The Chief, Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas, expressed the deep regret of all at the departure of Mr and Mrs Mann, and emphasised the great assistance rendered by them to the society over a considerable number of years. Throughout his association with the society, Mr Mann had acted as musical director, and, as such, had arranged all concert items for the monthly gatherings, and had organised the society’s St. Andrew’s Night concerts, which had invariably proved artistic triumphs. Above all, Mr Mann had established, trained, and conducted the Saint Andrew Ladies’ Choir, which was now a tremendous asset to the society. It was recognised that Mr Mann’s services to the society would have been impossible of fulfilment without great personal self-sacrifice on the part of Mrs Mann. On behalf of the society, and of the members of the Council and the Choir, the Chief presented to Mr and Mrs Mann a handsome fruit bowl, suitably engraved. On behalf of the Choir, Miss C. M. Francis handed Mrs Mann a beautiful bouquet, the handiwork of Mrs P. G. Ramsay.
Mr Mann responded on behalf of himself and Mrs Mann.
It was announced, amid applause, that Mrs Alan Graham had kindly consented to arrange the future musical programmes of the society.
