OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

CRITICS IGNORED (To the Editor.) Sir, —Regarding milk deliveries, I ignore my two critics’ letters —“Working Man” and “Underpaid,” as they have not signed their names and have wandered far away from the subject.— I am, etc., H. PRESTON. Mastefton, May 19. MILK COSTS & PRICES (To the Editor.) Sir,—-With the milk question now occupying the minds of many residents it might be opportune to mention a few worth-while facts. This winter the milk producers agreed to reduce the price of cream to the milk vendor by Is per gallon, with the hope that this would be passed on to the deserving public. Where has this Is gone? The milk vendors continue to charge the same price as last ( winter in spite of the fact that they are purchasing the cream for less. The public have listened to the parrot-like excuse of increased costs, shortage of labour, etc., etc., long enough, as all know these are offset by the fact that the milkmen are receiving cash in advance, no compete tion, shorter working hours and a considerable saving of petrol. The zoning was a self-inspired project by the milkmen, brought about for their own benefit. In Wellington the private milkmen have to compete with the City milk supply, and in spite of the running costs being much higher, receive less than the local milkmen. However, the fact remains that the milkmen are retaining for themselves Is per gallon for cream, which should have been passed on to the public. The milk vendor will need a more thorough explanation than he has been in the custom of giving in the past to satisfy the public.—l am, etc.. “COLE STREET.” Masterton May 19.
