Proposed Crematorium Site. ' The Masterton Borough Council has in view a suggested site for a crematorium in Masterton Cemetery. At its meeting last night it was decided to make provision for the levelling of the site at a cost of about £lO, subject to its approval by the council after an inspection of the proposed site. , Drover Found Guilty. After a retirement of 40 minutes, a jury returned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation for leniency in the case of a drover, Thomas Westworth Martin, charged in the Napier Supreme Court yesterday with sheep-stealing. Martin was charged with the theft of 60 sheep valued at £37 10s, the property of William Torbett, in February. He was remanded till Friday for sentence. Soldier Fatally Injured. Driver. Albert William Blackwood, aged 19, a Territorial, received fatal injuries when riding a motor-cycle on the main Akaroa Road yesterday morning. Driver Blackwood was thrown from the motor-cycle at a sharp bend about a mile and a half on the Christchurch side of Akaroa. He died within a few minutes. His home address was 174 Main South Road, Caversham, Dunedin. Gift to N.Z. Air Force. A circular letter has been addressed to all Danes in New Zealand appealing for subscriptions, however small, to the fund for the purchase of a war plane for the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The fund has been established in connection with the celebration of Denmark’s Constitution Day, June 5, and contributors are asked to forward their donations to the president of the Danish Association in New Zealand or to the secretary-treasurer, P.O. Box 14, Kilbirnie, Wellington.. Borough Planting. Between 800 and 900 trees, including Pinus insignis and eucalypts had alreaddy been planted by the Masterton Borough Council this year, Councillor H. E. Gardner reported at last night’s meeting of the council. The council, he said, now had four plantations, with a total of 1400 trees. The council’s afforestation committee was complimented on its good work and it was decided to thank Mr H. G.-Groves for his assistance to the committee. Memorial Park Negotiations. , Stating that he did not wish to enter into a controversy on the matter, Councillor G. D. Wilson, speaking at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council in reference to a remark passed at the annual meeting of the Trust Lands Trust, said the council had never alleged that the Trust had committeed a breach of faith in connection with the negotiations for the taking over of Memorial Park by the borough. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan: “The committee appointed by the. Trust agreed in substance to an arrangement between the two sub-com-mittees and then subsequently voted against it at their own Trust meeting.” “Loose Criticism.” Reference to what he termed “loose criticism” by a member of the public was made by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, when Mr Jordan drew the council’s attention to a statement made at the annual meeting of the Trust Lahds Trust in regard to the acquisition of reserves in the borough. Mr Jordan pointed out that through the generosity of residents and by bequests the council had acquired Mawley Park, the Williams properties at Lansdowne, half an acre in Renall Street from Mr Nops, two acres in the State Housing block of two acres and one acre respectively and more recently Douglas Park. That, he said, represented quite a respectable area.
