True Charity.
An authentic and modernised variant of the classical theme fof the dear old lady knitting socks for the pale young curate is given by an overseas writer. An old lady of 83 intercepted her vicar after church the other day and spoke thus: “In the good old days, Vicar, if I had wanted to give you a present I should have knitted you a scarf and embroidered you a pair of bedroom slippers. I do want to give you a present, but in modern conditions I think it had better be something else. So here is something which I know you’ll really like; but you mustn’t ask me where I got them.” Whereupon the astonishing old thing stretched out her hand and presented the vicar with four boxes of matches. He went on his way rejoicing.
