FIGHTING AT MALTA
ENEMY E-BOATS CAUGHT ' BY SEARCHLIGHTS. SUCCESSES OF R.A.F. PILOTS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 17. A Malta message says that on Saturday night one R.A.F. fighter pilot in 1$ hours destroyed three Italian bombers. It the early hours of Sunday morning, enemy E-boats were detected off the coast. The coastal defences picked them up in searchlights and engaged and severely damaged one E-boat. When it became lighter, it was seen that the damaged E-boat was moving slowly. The defence then scored a direct hit, which brought the E-boat to a standstill. Another tLboat was possibly destroyed in the first ment. An orange flash was seen just after the remaining E-boats passed out of the range of the searchlights. The British fighters’ score for the day was one borqber and four fighters destroyed, two flying-boats and two fighters damaged.
