DEFENCE OF MALTA MORE ENEMY AIRCRAFT DESTROYED. R.A.F. ACTIVITIES IN LIBYA. LONDON, May 17. At Malta, one British pilot shot down three Italian bombers in 1.? hours. In a raid which was still in progress when the message was being despatched, one German bomber and four fighters had been destroyed and two flying-boats and one fighter damaged. Coastal batteries in Malta sank an enemy E-boat and are believed to have destroyed another. Land operations 'in Libya were again confined to patrol activity. British fighter aircraft were active in the forward area of Cyrenaica. Last night bombers attacked Benghazi and Berka. From all operations in the Middle East three of our planes are missing.
