Three thousand tanks are believed to be locked in battle on the muddy banks of the Donetz River and around the blazing suburbs of Kharkov itself, says the Stockholm correspondent of the “Sunday Express.” Axis-controlled sources and Vichy admit that the Russians have penetrated 37 miles into Kharkov’s defences and are now fighting on the outskirts of the town. The Russians have made a second breach of the German lines at Losovaya, 70 miles south of Kharkov and 50 miles from the Dnieper dam. The Moscow radio says that many Germans in the Kharkov area are laying down their arms and surrendering. Kharkov, it states, has had a powerful defence system 40 miles broad. . FINNISH'INTIMATION NO SEPARATE PEACE WITH ' RUSSIA. LONDON, May 16. The Finnish radio says that the Finnish Foreign Minister, M. Tanner, has issued a statement that Finland will never make a separate peace with Russia.
