CARTERTON

BLACKOUT TRIAL STRICT OBSERVANCE REQUESTED (“Times-Age” Special.) The residents of Carterton Borough and the County of Wairarapa South on ■ Monday night next will participate in a blackout trial. The exact time of the blackout is undisclosed, but it will take place between sunset and midnight. The beginning and ending of the emergency period will be indicated by fire sirens and people are asked to be fully prepared and to conform strictly with the regulations. PATRIOTIC EFFORT “JOHN BULL’S” OFFER ACCEPTED. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over a meeting held in Carterton last evening, when the Carterton Borough and South Wairarapa’s effort in the 1942 patriotic appeal was discussed. “John Bull” who so successfully ran Masterton Borough and County’s effort to raise, their quota, offered his assistance in raising Carterton’s share in the appeal of £4067, and his generous offer was accepted with thanks. A start by “John Bull” will be made in real earnest next week and it is anticipated that with his help the local quota and more will be raised very, quickly. Those present at the meeting were Messrs J. W. Card, T. Horton, H. Hardinge, J. Kiernan. N. C. C. Shepherd, J. Steel, W. Martin, the Rev. Madell, and R. W. Roydhouse. EADIES’ BOWLING CLUB SEASON OFFICIALLY CLOSED. The closing day of the Carterton Ladies’ Bowling Club was held recently. A very pleasant function took place, when the trophies for the year were presented by Mr Gordon Hughan, the donor of the Champion Rose Bowl. Mrs Martin, the president, welcomed Mr Hughan and also congratulated the various ladies who had been successful in winning the various events. Other members also spoke and thanked the president and officers'for their interest during the season. The trophies were won as follows: — Senior champion and holder of Rose Bowl, Miss Lamb; Mrs Robinson’s trophy, Mrs Colson; junior championship pairs, Mrs Thompson (s) and Mrs Colson (Miss Armstrong’s trophy). Mrs Colson and Miss Armstrong won the progressive pairs tourney held on Easter Saturday, and Mrs Thompson and Mrs Martin won the competition on the closing day. Patriotic Dance. A good night's enjoyment is in store for those who attend the patriotic dance at the Parkvale Hall tonight. Besides dancing for the young folk, cards may be played in the supperroom by non-dancers, for which good prizes will be given. Dance music will be played by Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra. Registered Poultry Keepers. A meeting for the purpose of electing a delegate to attend a meeting of registered poultry keepers at Palmerston North will be held in St. Mark’s Hall on Thursday, May 21, at 7.30 p.m. A new Wellington Provincial Council is to be formed at the Palmerston conference. Personal. Constable S. Hercock, of Levin, is on a holiday visit to Carterton. Mr and Mrs Hooper, of Eketahuna, are visitors to Carterton. Mr E. G. Pankhurst, of Greymouth, is a visitor to Carterton and is staying with Mr and Mrs A. E. Pankhurst, Post Office, Carterton. A very pleasant and enjoyable 21st birthday party was given to Pte. E. Pankhurst by his parents at the residence, Post Office, Carterton, last evening. Only a few friends and relatives were present. Pte. Pankhurst’s health was toasted and the key to the home was given him. A dainty supper was provided and the best wishes of all present, were extended. Pte. Pankhurst thanked his parents for his birthday party and those present for their felicitations. He returned to his military duties today. REGENT THEATRE “STRIKE UP THE BAND.” M.G.M’s. sparkling musical comedy, “Strike up the Band,” with bright music, gaiety and laughter, will. be shown tonight, - co-starring Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Paul Whiteman and his band.
