Free Kindergarten Movement. A meeting of the Masterton Free Kindergarten Council was held recently at the residence of Mrs C. J. Williams. Matters concerning the constitution Avere fully discussed, and it was decided to send a copy to the Registrar for his approval. Several of the members present offered the use of their homes for social functions during the coming month. Clergyman’s Buckjumping Prize. ' Winning a 10-dollar prize for riding a bucking bronco at a rodeo at La Brescia, Southern California, Avas a feat performed by the Rev. Jasper Calder, Auckland city missioner, during a health-recruiting trip to the United States, from which he has returned. Mr Calder said that, while visiting the rodeo, he was introduced to the judges and happened to mention that in his youth he had done some horseriding. Almost before he realised what was happening, he was introduced to a bronco, and, more surprising still “lasted the distance” on it. The unusual sight of a cowboy in clerical garb drew great applause from the spectators. Killed by Railway Engine. A verdict that James Lucas Monteith died in Waterloo Quay on May 4 from crushing injuries to the head and chest, Avas returned by the coroner, Mr W. G. L. Mellish, in Wellington yesterday. Monteith was struck and dragged by a shunting engine, but lavo shunters Avho were riding on the cowcatcher of the engine at the time of the accident gave evidence that they did. not see him on or near lhe line. In delivering his verdict, the coroner said that Monteith had been in an advanced state of intoxication and it Avas probable that he was lying beside lhe track when the engine came along, receiving his injuries as he was dragged. Failure to Report. A man who was stated to Avant to serve in the mercantile marine instead of in the army, and who had also been successfully appealed for by his employers, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday charged with failing to report for military service. He was Frederick Ernest Steed, and he entered a plea of guilty. Counsel said that Steed, who had recently been employed as a tinsmith by. a firm engaged on war work, had been a defaulter at lhe time of the appeal for him, but despite this the Manpower Committee granted an adjournment of service till June 30, when the appeal would be reviewed. The magistrate adjourned the case till after the Manpower Committee had reviewed the appeal.
