SOLDIER INJURED
ACCIDENT IN QUEEN STREET COLLISION BETWEEN VAN AND MOTOR CYCLE. SOME DELAY IN ARRIVAL OF AMBULANCE. A fracture of the left leg and abrasions were suffered by a soldier, Private George Basil Wilson, aged about 20, of Lower Hutt, when a collision occurred last evening in Queen Street, Masterton, between a motor-cycle he was riding and a furniture van owned by Messrs Fly and Young and driven by Mr Claude Andrews. The accident occurred at about 7.20 p.m., near the junction of William Street. It appears that Messrs Fly and Young’s furniture van was proceeding northward along Queen Street wljen a motor-cycle, apparently not unler complete control, came out of William Street and struck the front of the van cn the far side. The van was travelling slowly at the time of the accident, on the correct side of the road, and pulled up Avithin a few feet. First aid was promptly given to the injured man by members of the St. John Ambulance, pending the arrival of Dr. J. Rich. On account of the nature of the injury, it was not possible to remove the sufferer until the ambulance reached lhe scene. It is stated that the call for the ambulance was put through by telephone at 7.20, p.m. and that the ambulance did not arrive until 7.58 p.m. It Avas reported this morning that the condition of Private Wilson was not regarded as serious. He was doing as well as could be expected. Considerable difficulty Avas experienced by the police in handling the large croxvd which assembled in the vicinity of the injured man \vhile he was awaiting removal to hospital.Members of the law and order section of the E.P.S. gave valuable assistance.
