MR JUSTICE OSTLER

RETIRING IN OCTOBER NEXT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Formal'notice of his intention to retro from the Supreme Court Bench as from October 1 next has been given by the Hon. Mr Justice Ostler. The Minister of Justice, Mr Mason, stated yesterday that it had been known that his Honour’s health had been failing for some time, but with courage characteristic of him he had long resisted the inclination to give up his judicial Avork. Mr Justice Ostler would meantime be stationed in Wellington and Avould assist in the work at the local Supreme Court. He would also for the time being continue his Avork as chairman of the Prisons Board. The Minister said that the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) had advised him that by common consent the judges had offered, in the conditions prevailing at present by reason of the war, to carry on the judicial Avork after Sir Hubert Ostler’s retirement Avithout any new appointment being made, if the Government considered that that course would assist the State in these difficult times. The Government had accepted this offer from the judges, and the vacancy would not be filled unless circumstances subsequently changed.
