: BOROUGH COUNCIL [ MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) 1 The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held on Monday evening when there were present the Mayor (Mr C. R. Holmes) Councillors C. W. Skill, M. N. Hardie. W. H. Corfield, F. Gray, H. I. Parsons G. L. Sievers, T. A. Hamilton and W. J. Blissett. The Cemetery Trustees notified that the borough subsidy for upkeep would be £35. The Minister of Defence wrote thanking the Council for the loan of band instruments, and guaranteeing to return same in good order. G. P. Cotter wrote offering to lease the Huangarua Park for grazing.—Refused. J. A. Beveridge waited on the Council with reference to the compilation of an urban farm lands list. —It was resolved that no action be taken. The Health Inspector forwarded r favourable report on the health of the borough. Hospital Rates. At the meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council on Monday evening the yearly increase in hospital rates came under notice. The Mayor (Mr C. R. Holmes) said it apeared to him that it was not a ratepayers’ affair. The Defence Department notified that there was need of more beds, and. the Hospital Board had to supply them and provide additional accommodation. The cost of this fell on the ratepayers and he considered this to be wrong, and the burden should be borne by the Consolidated Fund. It was an impost on one section of the community. In addition to paying Social Security, charges, old age pensions, etc., ratepayers had to shoulder hospital charges. He moved that a protest be sent to the Government. The motion was carried unanimously. Chrysanthemum Show. The annual chrysanthemum show of the Garden Circle was held yesterday when there was a very fine display of blooms.
