The “Red Star” says the Russians, in their drive against Kharkov, broke through the German first line of defence. They are steadily widening the breach, have captured many fortifications and are hotly pursuing the enemy. A Moscow communique stated that a Russian unit on the north-west front had killed 250 Germans and captured a large quantity of war material. A German infantry battalion, supported by tanks, attacked Russian positions in one sector of the Kalinin front. The Russians allowed the enemy to get to. close range and then mowed them down with point-blank fire. The Russians counter-attacked and the Germans retreated, leaving 400 dead and wounded. ALLIED MATERIAL BIG SUPPLIES DELIVERED TO RUSSIA. BY WAY OF MURMANSK & IRAN. (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, May 14. The British United Press Ankara correspondent says well-informed circles state that a million and a half tons of British and American war materials reached North Russian ports during the winter. An average of twenty lorries daily entered from Iran and also quantities by rail. The volumes of materials entering in north and south are increasing.
