VICHY & U.S.A.

REPORTED OFFER CONTROL OVER WARSHIPS AT MARTINIQUE. REFUSAL TO DELIVER TANKERS & MERCHANTMEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 14. It is learned that a Note which has been sent by Vichy to the United States agrees to immobilise the three French warships in Martinique (an aircraftcarrier and two cruisers), but rejects a demand for the delivery of tankers and other merchantmen there to the Allies. It accepts the principle of negotiating a new statute for the Antilles (West Indies islands) through normal diplomatic channels.
