SHATTERING BLOW

STRUCK BY R.A.F. IN MIDDLE EAST DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY TROOP-CARRIERS. OCCUPANTS LEFT STRUGGLING IN SEA. LONDON, May 14. British, Australian and Canadian pilots have told thrilling stories of their brilliant air victory in the Mediterranean, in which 13 big junkers troop-carrying planes and two Messerschmitts were shot down, with the less of only one of our planes. Most of the other Junkers in the formation of 20 were hit and some were probably destroyed. The Junkers, which were flying low over the water, were carrying troops. Many of the men who were in the planes shot down were seen struggling desperately in the water, trying to escape from the burning planes and oil on the water. In a matter of minutes, Junker followed Junker into the sea, the planes falling in flames at half-mile intervals. The Germans have for some time been using these big planes for taking troops to Libya, but mostly at night.
