ENEMY SHIP
SUNK IN AMBOINA HITS SCORED ON TWO OTHERS. LONG-RANGE ATTACK BY ALLIED PLANES. (Bj' Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 14. General MacArthur’s headquarters announced this morning that Allied planes made a long-range flight last night to the Netherlands East Indies and attacked Japanese shipping at Amboina, the Indies’ second largest naval base. The bombers sank a 3000-ton enemy vessel and scored hits on two others of between 2000 and 3000 tons. Bombs also set fire' to a wharf. In New Guinea Allied planes in a surprise attack on at least 15 grounded Japanese planes at Rabaul blew up at least three and crippled most of the others. Amboina is 600 miles north of Darwin and 1400 miles west of Port Moresby. ENEMY ACTIVITY NAVAL & AIR REINFORCEMENTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Special P.A. Correspondent.) SYDNEY, May 14. Though adverse weather conditions on Tuesday brought a halt to the war in the south-west Pacific, the stop was a brief one, and the latest communiques report extensive air activity by the Allied and Japanese forces. Prominence is given to an American broadcast statement that “the activities of Japanese ships observed by Allied reconnaissance planes indicate that enemy reinforcements are arriving steadily. The Japanese vessels arc believed to be moving down from the Caroline Islands. The reappearance of Japanese bombers as well as fighter aircraft over the Port Moresby area indicates that the Japanese have received aerial reinforcements as well as naval.
