Mrs E. Robbins and Miss P. Rollett, Masterton, are visiting their mother, Mrs C. Rollett, New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs John McLean, Gisborne, are the guests of the latter’s brother, Mr S. C. Pinkerton, Akura Road. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Education, xvill leave Wellington for the north by the Limited express tonight. A London message states that Dr. Evatt, the Australian Minister of External Affairs, who has arrived, in London, has been appointed a Privy Councillor. Mr P. J. Twomey, of the Makogai Leper Trust Board, is severing his connection with the Christchurch Gas Company in order to devote his full time to leper work. The names of Mesdames C. A. Carmine, T. C. Richardson, G. Cowie and E. G. Norman were omitted yesterday in the list of those attending the monthly meeting of the Masterton branch of the Plunket Society. Mesdames A. F. Stewart (Masterton), L. T. Herbert (Pahiatua) and Misses K. Cruickshank and M. Thurston (Masterton) are visiting Palmerston North for the North Island Voluntary Aid Committee meeting, which is being held today. Miss Trevor Hunter, a slightly-built, 26-year-old girl who formerly taught dancing in Wanganui, has gained her wings and is now a fully qualified ferry pilot in Britain, according to advice received by her father, Mr M. A. Hunter, of Hastings. Miss Hunter, who has the distinction of being the first New Zealand girl to fly service aircraft in Britain in wartime, learned flying with the Western Federated Aero Club. Mr Keith R. Johnston, the commander of the Union Airways Lockheed liner which crashed on Mt. Richmond, Nelson, with the loss of all five occupants, xvas well-known in Masterton. For a period from November, 1936 to May, 1938, he was pilot-instructor for the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club He left the club to join Union Airways. The late Mr Johnston was regarded as a highly qualified and very capable pilot. Mr lan C. Bennington, an original member of the Masterton Social Security Office, left this morning for a northern camp, where he joins other Air Force trainees before going overseas. His recent success in local preliminary examinations was greatly accounted for by his all-round military knowledge acquired xvhilst attached to the Lower Hutt Artillery and Machine Gun Corps, and as Company Sergt.Major of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment. He is a fast wing three-quarter and is an ex-member of Wellington College and of Messrs Thos. Cook & Sons Wellington office. Mr and Mrs S. Herbert, of Cornwall Street, Masterton, who are leaving to take up their residence in Wellington, were entertained at a social gathering in the Savage Club Rooms last night by members of the Masterton Hibernian Society, Masterton Catholic Club and a number of friends. A most enjoyable time was spent in dancing and vocal and pianoforte solos xvere contributed. The departing guests were the recipients of presentations from those . present. The presentation was made by Mr J. Connors and other speakers were the Rev Father N. Moore, Messrs J. McDonald, J. Curry and W. Orange. Mr Herbert returned thanks on behalf of Mrs Herbert and himself.
An enjoyable evening ■ was spent at St Matthew’s Parish Hall recently by the many friends of Ivir and Mrs J. L. Fulton, when the coming of age of their eldest daughter, Mona Edith, was celebrated. Mr W. J. Flaws proposed the toast to the guest of honour. Miss Fulton replied, thanking all present for the many beautiful presents she had received. Mr Fulton handed his daughter a gold wristlet watch. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. Vocal solos, accompanied by Mr Miller Hope, were delightfully rendered by Misses Helen Bannister, Mona Fulton, Hira Tauwhera and Mr J. L. and Les Fulton. Music was supplied by Mr A. Barnes and Mr H. Fulton acted as M.C.
