RECORD MEMBERSHIP OF 862. PAST YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. A record membership of 862 is reported by the Wairarapa Returned Services’ Association in the annual report for the year ended March 31, 1942. The association occupies seventh place on the financial membership ladder of the New Zealand R.S.A. Sixteen members are at present on active service and 38 members are serving with the forces in New Zealand. The total receipts in the Poppy Day, Canteen and Wairarapa Patriotic Association funds for the year amounted to £536 and the sum paid out in relief was £339. Since the inauguration of Poppy Day in 1923, £BBB4, including £5516 from Poppy Days had been received for relief funds and £6666 paid out in grants. During the year, periodic visits had been made to hospitals, and tobacco and other comforts distributed to “Digger” patients. Anzac Day parade had been well maintained. Over three tons of books and periodicals were collected and forwarded to the War Library Services for distribution to soldiers and a quantity of literature had also been supplied to camps and social clubs. The appeal for suitable reading matter was continuous. Branches of the association had been successfully maintained in Carterton,, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough. Appreciation is expressed of the services of the ladies of the Wairarapa in connection with Poppy Day sales and thanks extended, to the public for its response to the appeal. The committee appeals to members for their full support in the future.
