AMERICAN AIRSHIPS
MAY CARRY PLANES FOR USE AGAINST U-BOATS. STATEMENT BY VETERAN COMMANDER. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) WASHINGTON, May 13. Captain Charles Rosendahl, the vettran commander of the United States dirigible force, told the House of Representatives Naval Affairs Committee that America could build dirigibles capable of carrying ten or twelve planes, which could be released when submarines were sighted. Germany’s use of such dirigibles, especially for bombing American cities, had probably been blocked by the United States’ refusal for some years to sell non-inflammable helium gas. America had the only large-scale supplies of helium. The committee approved of a Bill authorising the construction of 24 additional blimps (non-rigid airships) for coastal patrol. The committee struck from a Bill already passed by the Senate a clause which would prevent the construction of rigid airships.
