GREYTOWN
LEAGUE OF MOTHERS MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs A. Bull presided over a fair attendance. Mrs W. J. Knell read a letter received from Lady Alice Ferguson, thanking the League members for the Christmas cake sent to her which was much appreciated. Mrs A. Johnson gave the thought for the month. The choir contributed two glees, “Spring and Summer” and “Neapolitan Nights,” which were much appreciated. The next meeting on June 9 is to lake the form of a “Father’s Night,” and will be held in the Parish Hall. Miss Higginson, Matron of the Grey town Hospital, addressed the meeting, her subject being “Diet.” Valuable information relative to food, etc., was imparted to those present. Miss Higginson was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Sympathy was extended to Mrs H. Rees, who recently met with an accident. The hostesses were Mesdames E. Haigh, M. Greathead, Ross and Langford. Personal. Mr and Mrs G. Maloney and family are spending the school vacation in Palmerston North. S.M. Court. The monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Greytown yesterday, Mr H .P. Lawry being on the Bench. Reserved decision was given in the charges heard at the last sitting against John Rowlands, licensee of the Greytown Hotel. On the charge of having kept his premises open for the sale of liquor after hours defendant was fined £5 with costs 10s. The other charge was dismissed. Hotchey Matakatea was charged with the theft of three shillings and with having wilfully damaged one window valued at £1 15s and a cash till valued at ss, the property of F. J. Nichols. He was sentenced to imprisonment for three months on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative. TOWN HALL “PIRATES ON HORSEBACK.” Tonight’s outstanding programme will be headed by “Pirates on Horseback,” a stirring Hopalong Cassidy picture with William Boyd, Russell Hayden and Andy Clyde in the leading roles. “Behind the News,” featuring Lloyd Nolan and Doris Davenport, will also be shown.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Rongokokako Women’s Institute held in the local hall, Mrs W. J. O’Niel (president) presided over a fair attendance. Mrs M. Morriss gave a demonstration on the making of camouflage nets. The competitions for the month resulted as follows:—Autumn leaves and berries: Mrs Morriss Senr., 1; Miss D. Nagel, 2. Jug covers: Mrs K. Faulkner, 1; Mrs S. Smith and Miss A. Payne(equal), 2. Flower (two sections). Miss D. Nagel I, Mrs S. Smith 2; Miss D. Nagel 1, Mirs Nagel 2. Miss A. Schultz was appointed as delegate to attend the conference to be field in Wellington in July. Tins of biscuits were handed in for soldiers’ parcels, and ten jug covers for the Red Cross Society. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs R- McAnulty and Miss A. Schultz.
