SHIPS V. PLANES
CONTENTION IN UNITED STATES MORE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS DEMANDED. AS MEANS OF STRIKING AT ENEMY. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.4 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 1. The controversy regarding battleship. versus aeroplane, which has recked the Navy Department internally for months, has led to an agitation in Congress to limit or eliminate the construction of capital ships. This was indicated today, when Senaator Byrd voiced the opinion, growing in the Senate bloc, that emphasis should be placed on the construction of aircraft-carriers instead of battleships. Senator Byrd declared that the experiences of this war demonstiated the importance of air-power, and also that the only way to get naval planes within striking distance of the enemy at present is by aircraft-carriers. Therefore, he contends, more or these should be constructed as rapidly as possible.
