SUNK BY OLD AMERICAN DESTROYER. OFF THE ATLANTIC COAST. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 6. Naval headquarters today revealed how an over-age four-stacker United States destroyer surprised a German submarine off the Atlantic coast and sank it with a 4in. gun and took several of the crew prisoner. The U-boat was charging its batteries on the surface and members of the crew leaped, overboard when the destroyer’s gun fired. The U-boat two torpedoes, but both missed. Then a 4in. shell struck the submarine at point-blank range. A huge hole was torn in its side when the shell exploded with terrific violence. The submarine rolled over and sank. The Navy discloses that enemy submarines have sunk three more ships in Atlantic waters, with the loss of 23 lives. The victims were a small Norwegian freighter, a medium-sized British merchantman, and a mediumsized United Nations vessel.
