The engagement is announced cf Pamela Elizabeth Maud, only daughter of Mrs and the late Mr E. T. Wilder, Springbush, Hastings, to Richard Caverhill, younger son of Mr and Mrs A. Campbell Pearce, Olaliuna, Featherston. W. J. Broughton, the Dominion’s leading jockey, who is married and resides in Palmerston North, was called up for service in the last ballot. Broughton will be riding at Avondale tomorrow, his mounts including Gay Rosette in the Autumn Handicap, Noble Fox in the Mt Edon Handicap, and Tudor Rose in the two-year-old event. The Rev C. E. P. Webb and the Rev W. A. Hamblet't have been appointed canons of St Paul’s Cathedral. Dunedin, in succession to the late Canon Statham and Canon J. C. Small. Canon Small has resigned his membership of the Cathedral Chapter .and becomes canon emeritus. Both the newly-appointed canons were ordained in the Otago diocese, Canon 'Webb in 1908 and Canon Hamblett in 1912. and both have served in the diocese continuously since their ordination. At the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Referees’ Association, Messrs A. N. Campbell, B. Mahony, R. V. Phillips. G. F. Winter, B. G. Winter and R. M. McDonald, visiting members from the Wellington, Napier and Wairoa Referees' Associations, were present, and were given a hearty welcome by the chairman ,(Mr 11. J. McKenzie), who stated that the local Association would appreciate their assistance during' the season. Ho hoped that their stay in the Wairarapa would be both pleasant anfl beneficial to the local Association and to themselves, and that when they returned to their respective home towns they could look back with pleasure on their connection with the Wairarapa Association.
