NATIONAL GOVERNMENT
NEW OPPOSITION MEMBER’S ADVOCACY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Appealing in the House of Representatives last evening for the formation of a National Government, the new Opposition member for Mid-Canter-bury (Mrs Grigg) said the Opposition would be failing in its duty if it ceased to urge the formation of a unified, nonparty Government. Refusals, rebuffs and hard feelings or pride would not slop the Opposition pressing for a course it believed to be just, right and wise. The Labour Conference had said, Mrs Grigg continued, that a National Government was unthinkable. She did not propose to take that decision as final. The final decision should come from the elected representatives of the country. Decisions should be made in Parliament and not by a body which had no position in the constitution of the country. The Prime Minister’s views were known, but sooner than support him the party would embroil the country in an election and inevitably cause dissension and friction. Surely with the morale and confidence of the people being of utmost importance this was the time, when the leaders should work together and weld together the different groups of people.
