PATRIOTIC APPEAL

CAMPAIGN NEARING FINISH. LETTER FROM PRISONER-OF-WAR. (Contributed.) “John Bull’s” work is moving towards its finish. He realises that he must get something over the quota to pay the very modest expenses that have been incurred but he is sure the people of Masterton will not let him down. Yesterday one of his staff received a letter from Stalag XV.IIIA (a prisoner of war camp in Germany), which stated: — “It is 7 p.m. Sunday and the hut is a hive of activity; all kinds of supplies have arrived, cocoa, tea, ovaltine and every sort of made up dish. The Red Cross parcels are spread out and it is difficult to find a corner of the table clear enough to write. A concert party from the next camp has just left and everyone is trying to get at the stove. The Red Cross parcels seem small but it is marvellous how far they go. Our recipe for a plum pudding — 1 loaf of brown bread, 1 packet of biscuits, 1 dessertspoon milk powder, 4ozs. sugar, 2ozs. honey, 2ozs. lemon curd. 2ozs. dripping, 2ozs. cocoa, 1 packet raisins, 5 figs and 1 tin of dried carrots—boiled for 24 hours. We have been off work since Thursday—owing to the weather—six inches of snow. We get two weeks holiday Christmas and two Red Cross parcels. Tomorrow is our first Wedding Anniversary.” After reading this letter “John Bull” prays that we shall reach our quota.
