Mr J. R. Smith has been appointed editor of the "Evening Post.” Wellington, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr J. Parker. Mr Smith joined the “Post” in 1912, and was associate editor under Mr Parker.

Miss R. Robinson, of Masterton, who has been associated for many years with various local activities, has accepted a position with a legal firm at Hastings, and will leave to take up her new duties next week.

The engagement is announced of Florence Bessie, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. H. Tinkham, Masterton, to Major William Henry Ebbitt, M.C.E.D.. Opaki, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs G. Ebbitt, Wairoa. Mr J. L. White, for the last two years general secretary of the Wellington Y.M.C.A., was tendered a farewell on Monday night on the occasion of his leaving to join the forces. A welcome was also extended to his successor, Mr G. F. Briggs. The New Zealand High Commissioner in London has been informed that Mr A. H. Hallen, who was surgeon on s.s. Devon, is a prisoner of war at Marlag und Milag Nord. His next-of-kin is his wife, Mrs Ethel Hallen, No. 7 Road, Waitoa Lower, via Auckland. Two further appointments to commands of the New Zealand Army were announced last night by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones. Brigadier (Temp.) E. T. Rowllings has been appointed district commandant of the Southern Military District. Lieutenant-Colonel F. S. Varnham, M.C., E.D., at present area commander of the 7th Infantry Brigade Group, in succession to Major-General Wilder, with the temporary rank of brigadier. As a lieutenant-colonel, this officer commanded his battalion with success in Greece, and is one of the officers who were brought back from the Middle East.
