FEDERATION MEETING.
GATHERING AT CARTERTON
(“Times-Age” Special.) The fourth annual meeting of the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes was held in the State Theatre, Carterton, on Friday, Miss O. Wolters presiding over a good attendance of delegates. ■ The delegatets were welcomed by Mr Taverner (Mayor of Carterton), and Mr Court, Wairarapa South County Council chairman, both of whom spoke of their appreciation of the war work done by members. Mrs Diamond, president of the hostess institute, welcomed the delegates and visitors to the meeting and presented a Women’s Institute cookery book arid posy to Mrs Taverner and Mrs Court, a bowl of fruits to the president, Miss Wolters, and boxes of fruits and vegetables tastefully arranged, to officers taking leadihg parts in the proceedings. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Miss O. Wolters; committee, Mesdames A. Keif, Jarrett, Munn, Pink. Wilson, Nielsen, Peacock, Dagg and McKenna.
Institutes reported having completed the following war work:—293 soldiers’ parcels, 166 balaclavas, 108 scarves, 103 mittens, 33 pullovers, 23 sleeveless pullovers, 25 quilts, 27 htissifs, 300 garments to the Red Cross Society, 80 garments to the Seamen’s Mission, 2 caps, 13 kitty bags, 2 cardigans, 18 Air Force gloves, 3 string mittens, 9 pairs of socks, seaboot stockings, 18 4141 b. fruit cakes and shortbread to the Mission for Seamen, 6 cases Of Red Cross Hospital articles. 3 cases of Red Cross clothing, 2 parcels containing 184 garments io the Lady Galway Guild, 1 parcel t 6 the Lady Galway Guild, 2 parcels and 13 garments to the Plunket Society, 2 parcels to the Rev. Williams’s Flying Angels, cakes, biscuits, vegetables, books to the Sedgley Home, Whatman Home, Ahzac Hospital, Soldiers’ Club, Trentham Camp, 18 parcels of knitted comforts for soldiers, 18 patriotic parcels, children’s clothing, quilt and Peggy squares for the Red Cross, bandages for First Aid emergency posts, 18 pullovers for the Mercantile Marine; cafnouflage hets, collections of ergot, tins for First Aid dressings, waste paper, assisting with Paddy’s Market, Patriotic fete day. Air Force Band, soldiers’ teas and entertaining soldiers. The potato competition results foi- the year are as folows:—Over 30 members, Gladstone 1, with 1911b5.; under 30 members, Kopuaranga 1, with 2371b5. Individual members who grew most potatoes, Mrs Cave (Gladstone), .with 481bs. It was decided that in future the competition would be for the most potatoes grown from one pound of potatoes hot three potatoes as formerly; also that crops are to be sold at hot less than the market price. A demonstration of papier mache articles necessary'for Red Cross work was given by Mrs Prentice, of Wellington, who was accorded a vote of thanks and presented with a box of fruits, vegetables and eggs. The hostess institute, and Solway-Manaia Institute assisted by Carterton, served morning and afternoon tea.
