In addition to the strategic importance of the American landing in New Caledonia, the “Economist” points out that the island is also the source of two vital raw materials of munitions and industry —nickel and chrome. It is the world’s only important producer of nickel outside Canada. If this nickel and chrome had been allowed to fall under Japanese control, the Japanese would have become independent in these vital materials, of which at present they are seriously short.
