After the raid on Lae on Friday, the fighters swept on to Salamaua, where petrol dumps were blown up The Dilots had fierce dog-fights with Japanese fighters over Salamaua, and at Lae three Zeros were shot down, a couple falling to the guns _of the squadron-leader of the Americans, a lieutenant-colonel, who had already shot down Zeros in the Philippines. In actual combat with Japanese aircraft, Allied planes have shot, down four enemy aircraft to every Allied one lost. The Allies have also inflicted terrific damage on .grounded aircraft.
