Rubbish Fire.
The Masterton Fire Brigade was 'called out at 9.2 o'clock last night to a rubbish fire on a section at the rear of No. 116 Essex Street. Fall from Bicycle. Mrs Helen Hood, of Taumata Island, Greytown, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from a fractured leg as the result of falling from, a bicycle. Her condition this morning was comfortable. Search for Oil. The New Zealand Petroleum Company reported yesterday that drilling on the new location began 10 days ago and has reached a depth of 621 feet. The casing has been cemented at this depth and drilling is expected to be resumed about Monday next. Blind Institute. In connection with the local activities on behalf of the Blind Institute, the annual report of the Women’s National Welfare League states: Mrs Pither continues to look after the blind in the district and takes orders for baskets, etc. The latter are coming 'forward steadily. Welfare Work. The annual report of the Women’s National Welfare League states: “Welfare work has been carried on steadily. Although we have not had so many calls for assistance as in former years, we are pleased to have gifts of good clothing, shoes, etc. Of special note was the gift of an infant’s complete outfit, which went to gladden the heart of a young mother. Christmas cheer was sent to different families and gifts to the two hospitals.” Competition Winners. Horne, 64 Cole Street; Miss Cottrell’s painting, Miss Maskery, 49 Cole Street; pink bag, Mrs McWhinnie, 30 Cole Street; Mr Maclennan’s ‘picture, Mrs Pavitt, 119 Cole Street; cushion cover, Mr Anderson, RD., East Taratahi. The prizes may be obtained at John Bull’s office. If they are not claimed within five days they will be otherwise disposed of.
