FIRM RESOLUTION
DISPLAYED BY AMERICAN PEOPLE
POWERFUL & EXPANDING WAR EFFORT. MR WIN ANT’S IMPRESSIONS ON VISIT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) RUGBY, May 1. The American Ambassador (Mr J. G. Winant) told a Press conference this afternoon that what struck him most during his visit to the United States was the strengh, energy, drive and singleness of purpose of America today. There had been an enormous increase in production, he said, and the progress was much more than he had Thought possible. People in the United States were preparing for a long war. He had never seen more determination in the country than on his last visit. Mr Winant spoke of the time that must necessarily elapse to get the enormous machine going, but he felt that any fair-minded person who understood what had been done industrially would appreciate the stupendous increase in production achieved. The giant machine set up under Mr D. Nelson was working well. Mr Winant said they were discussing rationing in the United States, though clothes rationing was not under consideration. He added that he believed the average American wanted to support Russia, because they wanted Russia to have the best chance of smashing the Germans.
