RACES IN BURMA
SOME TREACHEROUS
OTHERS GIVE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE. FIFTH COLUMN DRAWN FROM BURMANS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) RUGBY, May 1. A good deal has been heard about Burmese treachery and the heavy strain imposed upon on the Allied troops by Burmese Fifth Columns, which attack them from the rear and cut their communications. On the other hand, Burmese regiments are reported to have distinguished themselves by their steadiness and courage. The fact is that the word Burmese has been loosely used to cover very different peoples —Burmans, Karens, Chins and Kachins. It is the Burmese properly so called who have supplied a Fifth Column under the leadership of the political party called the Thakins, or extreme Nationalists. These are anti-Indian and anti-British. The original armed force of the Burmese Military Police was recruited entirely from Indians and Karens. No Burmans were enrolled in this force, which still exists and has greatly distinguished itself in recent fighting.
