(By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, May 1.
It is officially announced in Berlin that Hitler and Mussolini met at Salzburg on Wednesday and Thursday. The conversations took place in a spirit of close friendship and indissoluble brotherhood of arms of the two nations and leaders. The talks resulted in a complete accord of views on the situation created by the overwhelming victory ’ of the Tripartite Powers and on the further conduct of the war in political and military spheres. Renewed expression was given to the stern determination of Germany and Italy and their allies to ensure final victory by all means in their power. Ribbentrop and Ciano participated in the political talks and Generals Kietel, Kesselring, Jodi, Von Rintelin, Cavallero and Marras took part in military discussions.
The meeting between Hitler and Mussolini is accepted in Britain as evidence that the day is near for the launching of Germany’s major offensive. Similar meetings preceded the invasions of Norway, Greece and Russia. It is believed that Hitler is ready to loose another blitzkrieg. Kesselring’s presence is regarded as significant, as it may indicate a move in the Mediterranean. There is no mention of Japanese representatives at any of the talks. TALK WITH MUSSOLINI JAPANESE ENVOY BOUND v FOR ROME. (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 1. The Tokio radio announced that Lieutenant-General Ichiro Banzai had left Berlin for Rome by plane, to confer with Mussolini. •
