FOREST FIRE
DESTRUCTIVE OUTBREAK IN RHODE ISLAND
POSSIBLY OF INCENDIARY ORIGIN,
BUILDINGS & TIMBER BURNT.

Three Rhode Island towns were placed under martial law today as very serious New England forest fires raged over fifty square miles of timber and brush land, destroying 250,000 feet of Governmentstored lumber. Mr James Simmons, Forest Service Supervisor, said the fire might have been of incendiary origin. Thirty-four buildings, including thirteen houses, have been destroyed. At least 1,500 persons are attempting to check the fire.
