RUNNERS IN EMERGENCY

JUNIOR SHOP ASSISTANTS TO BE ENROLLED. POSITION OF SCOUTS & COLLEGE PUPILS. A proposal was put forward at last night’s meeting of the Masterton and District E.P.S. to enrol Boy Scouts and senior College pupils for service as runners in an emergency. The airangemen t suggested was that . Boy Scouts should report with their bicycles to the Communications Controller. -This is quite contrary to instructions issued by the Education Board,” observed Mr J. W. T. Jones. “These instructions state that no children will be allowed to leave the school and go out on to the road. What is the position? Who is actually in charge of these boys? Can you clarify the position, Mr Chairman?” Mr T. Jordan: "The proper place for the children is to remain in the schools.” In view of this position, with which others concurred, the meeting agreed to enlist a number of junior shop assistants as runners, pending the release of College pupils to augment the number of runners. The opinion was expressed that most Boy Scouts would be too young for this service. Mr M. M. Simpson staled that youths between 16 and 13 years of age were wanted, besides others’over that age but unfit for Territorial service. Those wishing to assist are asked to *• communicate with Mr Simpson (Postmaster) . _ •
