SPIRITED COMPETITION

FOR AUTUMN CATTLE FAIR AT MASTERTON. SHEEP IN GOOD DEMAND. The Associated Auctioneers report as follows on their second autumn cattle fair held at Masterton on Wednesday in conjunction with the weekly sheep sale. A large entry of sheep came forward and again comprised chiefly hoggets, one or two pens of ewes r.w. ram and an odd line of wethers being yarded. Competition in all sections was again keen and a good sale resulted. Fat ewes made from 14s 6d to 17s 4d, while light unfinished do: made Ils 6d, 12s 6d to 13s. Fat wethers 26s 4d to 275, fat lambs 25s 6d. woolly wether lambs 17s 3d, 18s 7d to 19s, medium do. 13s 6d, 14s lOd to 15s Id, shorn w.f. wether lambs, medium, 13s, 13s 6d to 13s 7d; medium shorn ewe lambs, 14s 8d; b.f. lambs, 15s, 16s to 17s 3d; 2 and 4-th. wethers, 23s 4d to 23s 9d; forward condition 2-th. wethers, 245; s.m. ewes r.w. S.D. ram, 14s 3d; fattening ewes, 12s 6d. The cattie entry was a large one, the yards being filled, and attracted a large and representative attendance. Eighteen-months. 2’/2yr. and SVs-yr. steers sold under spirited competition. One very attractive line of nicely bred P.A. steers offered on account of Mr C. H. McKenzie topped the market in all steer sections for the day at £lO 7s, and Mr C. R.. Judd, with a line of good condition P.A. Shorthorn cross steers headed the 18months section at £8 2s. Three or four pens of weaner steers which were yarded attracted attention and sold from £5 Is to £5 ss. Female cattle showing condition were again in demand but any Idw condition carry-over store cows showed a decline in prices on our last fair, this no doubt being accounted for by the approach of winter and farmers not being keen on carrying low condition cattle over. However, forward cows made from £5 15s to £6 ss, and P.A. cows r.w. P.A. bull making to £6 ss. The number of fat cattie yarded slightly exceeded the demand owing to the fact that the attendance of outside butchers was not large, with the result that the prices in this- section were easier. A total clearance in all sections was effected under the. hammer at prices which must be considered very satisfactory. The following list of principal sales will indicate values:— 3'/a-yr. steer, a/c Tuxford Bros., £9 ss; do., a/c O. A.
