LORD BEAVERBROOK
FREE TO EXPRESS HIS OWN OPINIONS STATEMENT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. REFERENCE TO SECOND FRONT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) RUGBY, April 30. Replying to a question in the House of Commons whether the Prime Minister’s attention had been called to Lord Beaverbrook’s speech in the United States, in which he advocated the opening up of a “second front” in Europe, and if the statement had been made with the Premier’s authority, Mr Attlee said: “The Prime Minister’s authority was not required', since Lord Beaverbrook is as free to express his own opinions as any other person.” Asked to explain Lord Beaverbrook’s position, Mr Attlee added: “Lord Beaverbrook is not holding a definite appointment. He is undertaking a special mission of an informal kind. He is not in the same position as someone who is in the direct employ of the Government.”
