TAKEN OVER

BY SWISS GOVERNMENT

CARE OF BRITISH INTERESTS

IN JAPAN.

EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE TO ARGENTINA/

(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) RUGBY, April 30.

•It is stated authoritatively that the British Government has requested the Swiss Government to take over from the Argentine Government the care of British interests in Japan. Since the entry of the United States into the war, the Swiss Government has looked after British interests in all other enemy territories. The change is being made for reasons of administrative convenience and the Argentine Government has been warmly thanked for the care and assiduity which, it has displayed during the months in which it has performed these duties. A, further consideration which- led the British Government to reach this decision is that the International Red Cross, which is actively concerning itself with the care of British prisoners in the hands of the Japanese, is largely staffed by Swiss nationals.
