A Chinese military spokesman said Japanese mechanised units in the Lashio area were faced by encirclement, because they had penetrated too deeply, but he admitted that the strategical situation was still obscure. The spokesman said it was uncertain whether fires in Lashio had. been caused by Fifth Columnists’ bombing or by scorched earth tactics, but the bulk of Lend-Lease supplies had been removed before the Japanese latest advance. There is only minor fighting on the central and western fronts. The Chinese are still engaging the Japanese around Pyawbwe, and other Chinese forces are attacking east of Taung-gyi. WELCOMED IN CHINA . PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT’S SPEECH. ASSURANCE OF UNSWERVING FAITH. (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) CHUNGKING, April 30. The Associated Press of America says the Chinese authorities are greatly heartened by President Roosevelt’s speech. The Central News said: “China offers, for the comfort of President Roosevelt and her American friends her unflinching faith and unswerving determination, which no adversities in Burma or elsewhere can change.” The Saotang-Pao said: “President Roosevelt’s speech shows that Americans are sufficiently mobilised to deal serious blows at the enemy. President Roosevelt’s speech will affect, Axis morale, just as it will encourage the Allies.”
