STILL EXPANDING
CANADA’S SHIPBUILDING PROGRAMME.
OTTAWA, April 28.
Canada’s shipbuilding programme is still expanding at a fast tempo, the Hon. C. D. Howe, Minister of Munitions and Supply, revealed today. The value of orders now placed exceeds 550,000,000 dollars. Contracts have been negotiated for 71 additional corvettes, 25 more minesweepers, and 16 trawlers for minesweeping. Work is proceeding satisfactorily in eighteen major shipyards and in numerous smaller shipyards on both coasts, the St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes, on the construction of over 700 naval units. The cargo vessel construction programme contemplates the building of 172 ships at an estimated cost of over 325,000,000 dollars.
