Miss Helen Gillespie, Dixon Street, Masterton, has returned to Masterton from a visit to .Napier. The Rev E. H. Strong, Te Awamutu. has been appointed a canon emeritus of St Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton. Miss M. Mclntosh, Masterton, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs lan Mclntosh, Raetihi, has returned home.
Mr V/. F. L. Ward has been appointed Acting-Governor of the Reserve Bank for three months from May 1, according to last night’s Gazette.
Messrs H. M. Christie, Wellington, C. L. Grange, Auckland, J. W. Heenan, Wellington, and E. Hitchcock, Christchurch. have been appointed members of the Local Government Loans Board for one year from April 1, according to last night’s Gazette, At Auckland last week the death occurred of a former well known and popular resident of Masterton, Mr W. Hood. He leaves a family of two sons (Messrs Arnold and Wilfred Hood) and two daughters (Misses Rene and Eva Hood, Auckland). Mrs Hood predeceased her husband.
Major Percival John Richmond Fordham, M.8.E., V.D., a member of the head office staff of the New Zealand Shipping Company, died suddenly in Wellington on Tuesday. He was well known in Wellington, being a member of the Returned Services' Association and the South African War Veterans' Association. The death occurred yesterday at the age of 103 of Mrs Jane Priestlty, one of the best-known patients in the Auckland Infirmary. Her birthday was in January, and she had been in failing health for the. last two months. Mrs Priestley entered the infirmary in 1937. She was born in Epsom, England, and came to New Zealand with her husband 65 years ago. Her husband died at the age of 80 in 1915. Her father lived to 103.
The death occurred at Thames yesterday of a well known and highly respected resident, Mrs A. A. Fantham, Senr., at the age of 74 years. The late Mrs Fantham was born in Wanganui and had spent a large part of her life in that district and in Taranaki, where she was actively associated with various local institutions. The late Mrs Fantham loaves a husband, Mr A. A. Fantham, Thames, three daughters, and one son, Mr A. A. Fantham Junr., Masterton.
A large number of the friends of Mr B. Burgess, of Masterton, who has removed his racing stable to Awapuni, met this week and entertained him at a farewell gathering. Mr R. McKenzie presided, and in making a presentation of two easy chairs to Mr Burgess, expressed regret at his pending departure, and appreciation of the fact that he had been an excellent citizen of Masterton for twenty years. He wished Mr Burgess every success in the future. Messrs H. L. Esau, O. Thompson, J. Jameson, R. J. King. K. Duncan, J. E. Jenkins and J. McDougall spoke in a similar strain. Mr Burgess suitably replied. Yesterday the Minister of Defence. Mr Jones, announced that the appointment of Major-General E. Puttick, D. 5.0., is to be changed from that of Chief of the General Staff to General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Military Forces and he is to be promoted to the temporary rank of lieu-tenant-general with command of ail the land forces in New Zealand. Mr Jones announced that the following officers had been appointed divisional commanders:—Northern Division: Brigadier H. E. Barrowclough, D. 5.0., M.C. Central Division: Brigadier N. W. McD. Weir, C.B.E. Southern Division: Brigadier A. S. Wilder, D. 5.0., M.C., V.D.
