BALLOTED MEN
MINIMUM OF APPEALS ASKED FOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “The tendency to appeal should be avoided as much as is humanly possible so that our lighting services can be built up rapidly,” said the Minister of National Service, Mr Semple, when referring last evening to the Gazette issued yesterday calling up 17,955 men for military service. The Minister added that if, however, it was necessary for appeals to be lodged —and he quite realised that this course was necessary in a number of cases —all must be posted or delivered to manpower committees on or before May 8.
“Manpower committees arc working at top pressure in order to dispose of appeals in respect of the last ballot as quickly as possible.” said Mr Semple, “and if any appeals are late it is extremely unlikely that they will bo heard.”
Mr Semple said there had been many inquiries regarding the date of the next ballot and the classes of men to be called up. While he appreciated the desire of people to have this information, he regretted that at this stage it was not possible to give any indication. There were many factors to be considered. and as soon as War Cabinet was in a position to make an announcement the public would be advised.
