Air. Raid Shelters. Tunnelling work’in connection with the construction of the underground air-raid shelters at Wellington North has been completed, and inspected by the city engineer (Mr K. E. Luke). In six weeks two tunnels, each about 75 yards long, 12ft wide, and 9ft high, each with three adits (tunnelled entrances), 6ft wide, were constructed. Wardens’ Activities. The activities of lighting wardens are to be further extended to include instruction in dealing with incendiary bombs, etc. A meeting of wardens of No. 3 Area will be held tonight at 7.30, at which the Masterton Chief Warden, Mr W. Kemp, will be present to give an cutline of the new duties. A practical open-air demonstration will probably be arranged in the near future. Odd Fellows’ Dance. The dance held by the Mastertoil Odd Fellows’ Lodge in the Masonic Hall attracted a large attendance of dancers. Barnes’s Orchestra played the music and Miss E. Barnes contributed extras. The M.C. was Bro. B. Seddon. Trooper E. Spackman and Miss Falloon won the Monte Carlo waltz competition. Sisters Rickards, PVout and Beader were responsible for the supper arrangements. Parishioners' Contributions.

During the year ended March 31, 1942, parishioners of St Matthew’s contributed generously to missions, social service and other works outside the parish. The total subscribed, £396 9s 7d, was £lOB greater than that.for the previous year. In addition, £74 7s 3d in cash and £lOO in loan certificates had come in during the year for the Centenary Fund. This brought the total cash contributions from the parish to that fund to £1434 and the promises still to be redeemed bring the total to about £3520. Assault on Constables. While two constables were talking to the hostess of a rowdy party which had been complained of in Newtown, Wellington, on Anzac night they were abused then assaulted by men at the party, according to Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, when two brothers, John McCann, aged 25, soldier, and Les McCann, aged 26, seaman, were charged vzith using obscene language and with assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty. The magistrate fined each of the accused £2 on the obscene language charge and £5 on the assault charge. Trained Nurses’ Association.

At a well attended meeting of the Wairarapa Branch of the Trained Nurses’ Association, held last evening, a most informative talk on “Military Surgery” was given by Colonel Mitchell, of Greytown. In the course of his talk Colonel Mitchell contrasted the treatment of wounds in the present war with that of the last one. The modern methods of First Aid treatment were also dealt with and a very interesting account was given of the work of the field ambulance. On behalf of the nurses present, Miss Grant moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the speaker.
