ESPERANTO CLUB

SEASON STARTING ON MONDAY. A general meeting of the Masterton Esperanto Club was held last evening at 8 Short Street. Mr N. Lamont presiding over a good attendance of members. It was decided to commence the club’s 1942 season on Monday next and to hold weekly meetings thereafter. Reference was made to the death at Wellington recently of an eminent New Zealand pioneer Esperantist, Mr W. L. Edmanson. Tributes were paid to his outstanding and long service in the furtherance of the international language in the Dominion. A vote of sympathy with his bereaved relatives was passed. Briefly outlining the position of the Esperanto movement in the international field, the club secretary. Sergeant W. H. King, said reports indicated that the Esperanto organisation was being maintained in numerous countries despite the war and its resultant weakening of the movement. Informative journals continued to be received from England and Switzerland. there being no difficulties as regards censorship in the various countries. The International Esperanto League (London) had published its annual Year Book, although in reduced size. The Lyons Exhibition held at the end of last year had again used Esperanto for publicity purposes, and the British Esperantists are now engaged in the preparation of a giant petition urging the introduction of Esperanto into schools for presentation to the British Government at the opportune time.
